Ashley has worked in the tech industry since the late 1990's. He's obsessed with new technology and it's implications for small and medium sized businesses.
A new website is a big investment and there is a lot to think about. Technical decisions and specifications can make the decision even more complicated, but there are some things so basic that every website designer should get them right as standard:
A website that is easy to use on a mobile phone is now completely essential - particularly in recruitment as most candidates view your website on their mobile. Some website designers still recommend that you specify a completely separate mobile site we think that this is a bad idea - it's better to make your main website scale responsively to any device with any size screen. You can test your existing website here: https://www.google.co.uk/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/
25% of visitors will abandon your website if it hasn't loaded within 4 seconds. Lots of things can make a website slow, but bad code is an important factor. You can run a page speed test on your website here: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/
- standards compliance
All modern websites are coded in html and css and these web standards are defined by an organisation called W3C. Having a W3C web standards compliant website is the best way to make sure that your website will keep on working in the future. Valid code is important for accessibility (a legal requirement in the UK), and is a good indicator of how accessible your website will be on a variety of different devices. You can test your website here: https://validator.w3.org/
When you employ a website designer to build your new website make sure that it's going to be mobile friendly, fast loading and standards compliant - asking your designer to make sure it passes the above tests are a good way to achieve this. Your designer will hate us for suggesting this, but you'll get a better website.
